With the onset of fall in the Ozarks, one of the fun treats is the Persimmon. This orange, soft, meaty fruit ripens in the fall to produce a very sweet treat. Although very bitter when unripe, the Persimmon can be baked into breads, puddings, pies and other yummy dishes. In addition to using the Persimmon for cooking, there is an additional use for the slippery seeds of the fruit. Once dried, the seeds may be cut in half to reveal the seed germ. An old wives tale has it that the shape of the germ can predict the coming winter weather. If the shape is a fork-mild winter is predicted. If a spoon, expect much precipitation. If a knife is found, look out for "cutting" cold weather. Although it sounds much like a myth, we have found the lowly Persimmon is often correct. Perhaps the Persimmon seeds in your area are ready for checking and hold the true prediction of winter for you this year! |
